Do They Eat Parsnips In Pittsburgh?

Seems an odd question, no? And yeah, I know there's nothing sexy about a pic of slaw ... but this ain't just *any* slaw ... it parsnip slaw ... dat's right ... cabbage, onions & parsnips sliced very thin and julienne cut (good knife work, huh?) So WHY, you ask, did I put parsnips in my slaw ... because I had some on hand, dat's why! LOL Actually ... I'm up before dawn this cold morning, gettin' my mice in place for to make some big-assed Primanti sandwiches for supper tonight (guest request) ~ so the dough for the fresh baked Italian bread is rising as we speak ... and this slaw will be part of the sandwich, too. Now, if you will excuse me ~ I gotta go peel some 'taters for to make some homemade french fries....

Hey Chez, are you baking sourdough for that sandwich?

yeah phred, i used about a cup of my sourdough starter to make the sponge ~ but it's not a true *sourdough* bread today ... more of a soft italian vienna loaf

your making my mouth water now chez. I've been to primanti's several times when we get to the city. If your guest is from the burgh let him/her know that Natrona Heights checked in. That's somewhat to the north and east of the burgh. My wife and I are about to put some rib steaks on our grill here in South Fl. where we spend our winters. We won't return to the burgh until May.

Been to Primanti's, although I'm not from the burgh. My son married a burgher, and my kids went to school not far from there. For those who don't know, that sammich looks almost identical to one you'd get at Primanti's. The only variables are the types of meat and the type of cheese -- leaving off anything (like the fries) is verboten. It's always served wrapped in paper, even if you are not doing take out. The other regional sammich is chipped ham.

BTW, it ain't Steelers, it's Stillers. And yep, it ain't a good time right now to be a Stiller fan.
