Deep Thoughts ~ by Fat Johnny

Puttin' homegrown tomatoes on a boloney sandwich
is sorta like puttin' lipstick on a pig.

Kaw-Cajun Corn Chow Chow

Well, the fridge & pantry scan yesterday turned up all the stuff to make a batch of chow chow ... sweet corn chow chow. I had 7 big ears of sweet corn and a head of garden fresh cabbage, bermuda onions, fresh garlic ~ went out back to the garden and picked me a few chiles and green tomatoes ... badda boom, an hour later I got a batcha chow chow sittin' on the counter. Funny how dat works, eh?

The corn chow chow before simmerin', canning and processing it.

Bobo's Drive-In

This is my favorite burger joint in Topeka ~ it's been a local favorite for over 50 years, and business has never been better. The burgers are fantastic ~ hell, everything is good ... onion rings are to die for!! They even have homemade pies ... need I say more?

This is a Bobo's Steakburger

Here's a shot of the drive-in on a typical day ... the old-fashioned drive up carport doesn't even have them 'lectronic orderin' speaker thingies ~ the carhops come out and take your order, as well as bring it to you. They are VERY fast & efficient, some of the carhops been working there for 25-30 years.

Seesta B ~ Acting Corny

Mais, I took Seesta B (my sister, Brenda) with me to the veggie market the other day ~ we had a great time and came home with a truckload of good locally-grown produce. After hitting a couple of vegetable stands, we went down to a famous Topeka landmark for lunch ~ BoBo's Drive-In for burgers, onion rings and root beer.

This cantalope was the *score of the day* at the veggie stand, Meier's Veggie Market. Seesta B spotted a whole bushel basket of ripe cantalope for $2 ... there must have been 10-12 large melons in dat basket, so we split it between us. When is the last time you paid one dollar for 6 large melons? The bargain of the century, and I been eatin' cantalope till it's comin' out my ears!!!!

Best Pulled Pork EVER!

This was some KILLER smoked/pulled pork, dressed with a lil' my homemade *bastardized* Piedmont style mustard sauce.

Couple butts and a slab of ribs smoked by Cowboyup Eric ~ dat boy sure knows his way around a smoker, ah garrontee ~ this lil' piggie done gone to Heaven ... doin' the *wobba wobba* all da way, yeh.

Here's one them butts off the bone, before I further pulled & sauced it. That sauce in the pic is not what I sauced the pulled pork with ~ I sauced them ribs wit dat sauce (Smoky Mountain Smokers) ... and by the by, you don't see them ribs in this pic ~ why? Because I ate them already, dat's why!!

Smoked homemade hill country hot links & fried cabbage, sided up with garden fresh baby yukon gold potatoes lyonnaise. Everything on this plate is either homegrown or homemade ~ only thang storebought is the horseradish.

Also put up a few quarts of half sour deli dills today ~ can you say: hot pastrami & swiss on rye?

Unintended Consequences

Homegrown tomatoes, garden fresh cukes and bermuda onions.

Crisp bacon, hard-boiled eggs, Tillamook cheddar, pickled beets and homemade blue cheese dressing. Yes, there is a bed of crisp lettuce underneath all dat.

Well, I love the homemade Maytag blue cheese dressing ~ but the problem with making a good salad dressing is that you then have to eat a SALAD. So what's a fella gonna do but cowboy up and choke down some leafage ~ this one was pretty good, as far as salads go. The homemade pickled beets were good.
